How do I format a paper in MLA?

Writing in MLA

Answer

MLA is the common formatting style for most English and Humanities courses. You often use this style for English assignments, speech outlines, and many other classes. Please check with your professor and your assignment instructions to see how each of your assignments should be formatted.

  • Papers written in MLA typically do not require a designated cover page. Instead, you will have a four line heading and your paper’s title immediately before the beginning of your paper. This four line heading should include:

    • Your first and last name

    • Your Professor’s name

    • Your class’s name

    • The date, written Day Month Year (ex. 13 January 2021).

  • This information should be left aligned and not in a numbered list. There should be no blank lines between the information. After your four line heading, your paper title should be centered on the next line.

  • In the header of your word document, you need to type your last name and insert a page number. This information should be right aligned and appear at the top right corner of all pages of your paper.

  • The entire paper should be written in double spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font unless otherwise specified by your instructor.

  • If you are citing sources for your assignment, you need to include a Works Cited page after the last page of your paper. This is a separate page that lists all of your sources in MLA style. Additionally, all information from these outside sources must be cited in text. MLA in-text citations require the author or authors' last names and page numbers where applicable.
